Plants reveal clearly the extent of airborne deposition of pollutants

Flora around mining area gives essential and vital information about the state of the nature during the whole life-cycle of the mine. Especially mosses and lichens have been extensively used in this kind of monitoring. Labtium has many years of experience of the use of plants in geochemistry. These methods have been applied also to bioindicator analyses. We can provide analytical services using different types of sample preparation and digestion methods and analyses using different multi-element packages by ICP-OES and ICP-MS- techniques and special methods for components like Hg. Also analysis of hexavalent Cr is included in the scope of our methods.

When determining the concentrations of metals with respect to environmental loading, decomposition with nitric acid is suitable for samples which contain organic material i.e. vegetation, humus and topsoil samples.

Two methods are available:

Decomposition with nitric acid in a microwave oven (EPA 3051). Measurement ICP-OES / ICP-MS (Methods 503P and 503PM)
Decomposition with nitric acid at 90 °C (500): Measurement ICP-OES / ICP-MS (Methods 500P and 500PM).

Also decomposition methods that give the total concentration of elements are available, e.g. for analysing mineral dust.
