Energy

The energy industry has increased challenges due to the rise in energy consumption and stricter environmental responsibility and legislation. The production and use of energy is strongly contingent on the evaluation of environmental impacts.

Both industry and consumers have better knowledge of measured carbon dioxide emissions compared to five years ago. New environmental policies favor the utilization domestic fuels and the possibility of using better combustion techniques increasing the share of peat and biofuels i.e. wood origin fuels, landfill gases and biodiesel in energy production.

The energy industry is governed by several laws and legislation, which were created to minimize the environmental impacts and footprints in production: the Environmental Protection Act ensures pollution prevention, slowing down climate change and promotion of sustainable development. The permission procedure and best available technique (BAT) are also described in the environmental law. The Law of Emissions trading imposes a reduction of greenhouse gasses. The European emission trading is governed by an EU directive.

Building new plants is ruled by land-use and construction laws and also the Law of Environmental Impact Assessment for the bigger plants.

The Water Act influences the use of water and building water surroundings. The energy industry is also governed by the Waste Act.

Labtium's services

For the energy industry, as a part of selling products, there are cleaner fluegas, CO₂ trade free or maximum percentage of CO₂ trade free electricity and useful by-products: ashes (besides of main products electricity and heat). Using various kinds of solid and liquid fuels is challenging the tradional boiler technologies and fuel analyses.

Labitum's energy industry customers are power plants, forest industry, biofuel producers and clean technology producers. We analyze e.g. heating values, total contents of heavy metals and we also make solubility tests. For forest industry customers our fully equipped laboratory offers the chemical and physical analyses ofblack liquor and other process streams, pulp and paper making and wet end's trouble shooting.

Our services include the analyses of raw materials, characterization of final products, by-products and environmental performance.
